Time to go dual – core .. stop getting the AMD 3000’s

Initially rumored, and then thought only to extend to a few processors, it now seems that AMD is ending several Athlon64 lines, no longer offering them for sale and halting manufacture. It affects a total of 16 individual CPUs, all of the 3000+, 3200+ Socket 939 varieties. They are all single core chips, and will be no longer available come the end of this month. While AMD claims this comes due to the market’s demands (â??customer requestâ?), given the prices of the FX and X2 cpus, it’s hoped that AMD’s decision will allow them to offer their other CPUs at a better price point. Though all CPUs eventually cannot be ordered, typically a CPU stays available for many years, and is not cut as short as this. It makes you wonder what is up over at AMD.

Yipee ! Native wifi support for Linux

Software developers who build products for the Linux platform will no longer have to worry about embedding drivers to offer wireless support. Devicescape, which makes Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity) embedded devices software, last month released Advanced Datapath Driver for the Linux 2.6 kernel. Previously available only under proprietary terms, the driver will now be covered under the General Public License (GPL).

With the new driver, open-source developers now have the option to offer native Wi-Fi support within the Linux kernel. This means that notebook and desktop PC owners running Linux operating systems will be able to choose from a wider range of Wi-Fi adapter cards that work on their machines.

AJAX for mobile devices in india – any good ? data services a big mess.

After reading a few articles about AJAX for mobile phones , i was tempted to find the ground level situation in india.

Nowadays most mobile phones are Data capable.

Smartphones are being accecpted by public at a very rapid rate here. Nokia 6600 ,3230 and 6630 are the biggest hits in India. (forgive me mobile makers other than nokia – u ppl dont make affordable smart phones or don’t market them properly 😛 )

Javascript support in phones browsers are also good in these phones.

Thats not a big problem. Opera mobile browser is awesome . They have even launched a SDK for ajax mobile development here

But a big question – Are data services good enough to handle AJAX mobile services like flickr for example ?

Can the network latency or deficiency be handled/ tackled ?

These questions seem unanswered.

11-year-old boy sends legal notice to Naukri.com

CHANDIGARH: Guess who’s heard from Hari?

Job web site Naukri.com has received a legal notice from an 11-year-old boy claiming damages to the tune of Rs 1 crore for allegedly showing a part of his name in bad light, a report said.

The notice, sent by Aneesh Bhanot on behalf of his son Hari Bhanot, said that the advertisement is “totally insensitive to the name Hari.” It also charged that the advertisement has resulted in mental harassment and agony as many of Hari’s friends started poking fun at him.

Besides seeking the forthright withdrawal of the advertisement, the notice also wanted a public apology from the web site and Rs 1 crore as damages. Failing this, criminal and civil proceedings would be filed against the channel, the report said quoting the notice.

The advertisement showed a person explaining his boss’s name, Hari, to another over the telephone as, “H for Hitler, A for Arrogant, R for Rascal and I for Idiot.”

Web 2.0 ââ?¬â?? A medley of technologies

Good news for the users is Internet will not be boring anymore, as mundane and less interactive websites are becoming a thing of the past; the reason being Web 2.0 taking over the entire Internet platform. The future is very bright for highly interactive, rich web applications which are possible with Web 2.0 and a handful of web tool applications like Gmail & Orkut of Google and Flickr of Yahoo are already into using this Web 2.0, thereby tempting others to emulate them.

Popularized by OReily media and MediaLive International, Web 2.0 is considered to be the second phase or generation of architecture and application development for the World Wide Web. The applications in Web 2.0 often use a combination of techniques in which Ajax plays a pivotal role. Asynchronous JavaScript And XML (Ajax) is a development technique employed for designing interactive web applications, wherein web pages are made more responsive by designing the application such that data in small amounts are exchanged with the server. This eliminates the need to reload the entire page each time as the user makes a change and this signifies increased speed, bandwidth, interactivity of the web page.

Of late, many concepts and technologies have been developed under the tutelage of Web 2.0, which are mostly characterized by features like flexibility to share and reuse information, open communication, decentralised authority etc. Blogs, wikis,RSS,social networking softwares such as digg, del.icio.us serve as examples of Web 2.0 based applications.

As we move into the future, Internet will be as storehouse of terabytes and Pico bytes of information which will be available for sharing to all. This will solely be presided over by the use of advanced technologies but as of now, Web 2.0 is still in the stages of infancy taking time to reach great heights.

Revenue generation in Internet will become a matter of conflict since Internet marketers might have a tough time in the Web 2.0 era. Many new concepts like podcasting, interstitial advertising might gain predominance with the increased use of advanced web technologies as they are steadily becoming popular in the development circles.

Online advertising is one area that should be prudently watched, as it possesses a plethora of importance. The online advertising industry had undergone a healthy transformation under the aegis of Google Adsense and Yahoo Publisher Network (still in beta stage), conforming to the use of Web 2.0 development techniques.

Web 2.0 has invoked many criticisms one of which claims Web 2.0 to be no different from its predecessor Web 1.0 as the former is built up from the technologies and concepts of the former. Still, Web 2.0 with its increased usage and benefits promises a very prosperous and amiable future for the Internet users.

Open-Source Router to end Cisco dominance?

CNN is running an article about the emergence of an OpenSource Router product, currently in Beta, that targets mid-size enterprise customers for about one-fifth the cost of current enterprise networking giants’ hardware. From the article: “The machine runs on two Intel chips, but far more noteworthy is its software, known as XORP, or extensible open router platform. The versatile open-source application can direct data traffic for a giant corporation as easily as it can manage a home Wi-Fi network.” The current release is available for download from Vyatta’s web site.”
